Positive thinking and aging well
Have you ever wondered why some older people continue to stay active and healthy well into their later years, while others seem to age more quickly and have increasing health problems as they age? There is evidence that positive thinking can play a substantial role in this process. There is no argument that genetics and lifestyle choices have a big impact on how people age, but we now know that positive thinking is another significant factor.
Research shows that positive thinkers have better coping skills, stronger immunity, and a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. It is clear that taking an optimistic point of view rather than worrying and thinking negative thoughts can benefit not only your psychological well-being, but also your overall health and vitality.
A recent study followed 1,558 older adults for seven years to learn more about the relationship between positive thinking and the level of frailty seniors experience. In this study frailty was measured by assessing weight loss, exhaustion, walking speed, and grip strength. Positive thinking was measured by asking participants how often they had thoughts such as “I enjoyed life” and “I felt hopeful about the future”. The results of this particular study showed that the people who scored high on positive thinking were significantly less likely to become frail over the course of seven years.
Positive thinking has a wide range of consequences for people of all ages, that just may become more apparent as we reach our later years. Positive thinkers cope more effectively with stress and they are more resilient. Optimism has been shown to improve immunity, decrease the risk of depression, and increase longevity.
