What to look for when choosing an adult family home
We all know that it’s people who make the difference when it comes to a senior living facility. The staff and the residents set the tone for the environment, and the atmosphere of a home can vary greatly depending on who is present. So when you are doing your research to find an adult family home that is the best fit for you or your loved one, pay special attention to the other members of the household. The following are some good questions to ask as you visit a prospective home. These have been recommended by the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services. 
Questions you may have about the staff of the home:
- Is there adequate staff to meet my needs?
- How long have people worked here? Is there frequent staff turnover?
- Is there some level of nursing care provided? How often is a nurse available?
- Who will help me with medications if necessary?
- Can someone on staff help me with special care needs?
- Are staff appropriately dressed, personable and attentive?
- Do staff members treat residents with respect and dignity?
- Do staff members treat each other in a professional manner?
- What language does most of the staff speak?
Questions about the other residents:
- Do the residents socialize with each other? Do they seem happy and comfortable?
- Do they speak favorably of the home and staff?
- Do the residents seem like people I would want to live with?
- How are room assignments, changes and concerns handled?
- Is there a resident group that meets?
- Do any of the residents have a history of problem behaviors? How are these situations handled by staff?
