Be prepared for the unexpected

It’s so important for those of us who have aging parents to have some basic things in order, and to know where essential documents are kept, so that when something happens that requires us to make legal or medical decisions, we will be informed and prepared.

Here is a list of questions to ask your parent(s) that will enable you to feel updated and prepared. elder care Vancouver WA

  • “Do you have a durable power of attorney?”  This is a document that designates who will make decisions for you if you are unable to do so, due to mental incapacitation. You can choose one person to make your financial decisions and another to make health decisions, or one person can serve both roles.
  • “What are your end-of-life wishes?”  A living will, also known as an advance health care directive is a document that specifies what you want to have happen when it comes to end-of-life care. This can include decisions about what measures will be used to prolong or save your life, such as use of a ventilator or feeding tube.
  • “Do you have a will or a living trust?”
  • “Do you have long term care insurance?” It’s important to be familiar with the policy, and to know what is covered.
  • “Are all these documents current?” It is advisable to review your estate planning every year, especially when circumstances have changed.
  • “Where do you keep these documents?”  Make sure you know where they are and how to access them.
  • “Is there someone who advises you on financial matters?” As the family member, you may need to reach this person in case of emergency. You also may want to do some research to be sure that the financial adviser is reputable.
  • “In the event you can no longer take care of yourself, where would you prefer to live?”  Having these preferences and decisions made in advance before a crisis occurs, can provide your parent the chance to be more involved in the arrangements.
  • “What doctor(s) are you seeing? What medications are you taking, and do you know why you are taking them?”  This is crucial information to be able to provide to the hospital staff in case of a medical emergency.

When something unexpected happens you will be glad you asked these question in advance. It can help reduce your stress in a time of uncertainty. As part of your planning process, find out more about what we have to offer at Harmony Senior Homes. We would love to schedule a tour for you.
