Nutrition tips for seniors:

Seniors often hear about nutrition recommendations from their doctor. Two of the most common pieces of advice from physicians is to drink more water and eat more protein. Here are some reasons why these recommendations are so frequently given. Washougal WA adult family homes

During this hot, dry summer, it’s more important than ever for seniors to stay adequately hydrated. Dehydration happens in seniors for several reasons. Seniors often have decreased feelings of thirst, may take a medication that causes a need for more fluids, and often have an overall lower food and beverage intake than when they were younger. Dehydration can cause fatigue, confusion, muscle cramping, headache, dry mouth and eyes, and changes in blood pressure. You can increase your water intake by drinking a full glass with each meal, and one between meals. It also helps to have drinking associated with a routine, such as having a cup nearby when you are watching TV, or making sure to take a travel cup of water with you whenever you get in the car.

The other thing seniors frequently hear from doctors is to eat more protein. Protein is important because without it, your body has a hard time maintaining its immune system and muscles. Protein deficiency in seniors is a concern because it can cause difficulty with wound healing, dental problems, easy bruising, decreased appetite and fatigue. There is new research that reveals that seniors may need more protein in their daily diet than was previously thought. For those who have trouble chewing or swallowing meat and other forms of protein, there are many ways to drink your protein now.
