Reasons to return to the art of handwritten letters:
It is less and less common for us to pick up a pen and paper and send a letter to someone, but you may want to rethink completely giving up written correspondence for the convenience of text messages and emails. It has been proven that writing by hand has both physical and mental benefits, including improving learning, and encouraging a more positive outlook. When we are writing with pen and paper, we use our visual, motor, and cognitive systems in a different way than when we engage technology to communicate. Writing asks that we slow down for a bit, and connect the mind and hand. The sensory experience gives us access to our inner creativity.
We have to be present to write letters by hand. To write a letter of quality, we have to be thoughtful and focused on what we are doing. It’s not a time to multitask. It’s also valuable to spend some time unplugging. Time you spend writing is time you won’t be texting or checking your Facebook account.
There are other benefits for the letter writer. Expressive writing is related to improved mood, reduced stress, and an overall sense of well-being. Sharing your true thoughts with someone special is great for your morale, and your feelings of connectedness.
